Bringing Autism Awareness to life at Islwyn Park Coffee Shop

Caerphilly County Borough Council recently hosted the Autism Reality Experience Bus at the Islwyn Park Coffee Shop, offering a powerful and immersive training session to help individuals better understand sensory processing differences for some autistic and neurodivergent individuals.

Developed by Training 2 Care UK Ltd in partnership with 150 autistic individuals, the Autism Reality Experience Bus provided a mobile, hands-on training environment where participants engaged in simulated sensory overload, demonstrating what individuals may have to overcome daily.

The initiative aims to build empathy, increase awareness, and encourage more acceptance and inclusivity across the community.

Cllr. Elaine Forehead, Cabinet Member for Social Care, said:

“This was a fantastic opportunity for our community to gain a deeper insight into the lived experiences of people with autism. Understanding through empathy is an essential step toward creating an inclusive society. We were also proud to showcase the Islwyn Park Coffee Shop, where individuals with learning disabilities and autism offer a warm and welcoming service to visitors.”

The Islwyn Park Coffee Shop, located next to the skate park on Llanarth Road, Pontllanfraith, remained open throughout the event. Operated by individuals with learning disabilities, the café is part of Caerphilly County Borough Council’s commitment to providing meaningful work experience and training opportunities. Attendees enjoyed a selection of paninis, sandwiches, cakes, and coffee—many of which were prepared by Islwyn Catering, which supplies other local establishments as well.

The presence of the Autism Reality Experience Bus added a unique and impactful element to the day, offering a truly immersive and eye-opening experience for all who attended.  The day was also supported by our own Employment Support Team and Neurodivergence Wales.
