The Autism Reality Experience offers an innovative and immersive training opportunity for neurotypical individuals to step into the neurodiverse world. Through hands-on experiences, participants gain insight into the sensory processing challenges encountered by individuals on the autism spectrum. A unique opportunity to foster understanding, inclusivity and most importantly empathy.
ARE for Airports

The Airport Version has been developed with the support of Heathrow Airport and a special recognition need to go to Jenny Mclaughlin, project manager at Heathrow, who helped to make this version. Using an airport can be one of the most stressful events for anyone, but even more for an autistic person. The sounds, smells, signage, noise, reflections, distractions, boredom and anticipation are just a few things that will impact their important journey, and it is the responsibility of every airport to ensure that staff understand this from the passenger’s viewpoint.
The airport version of the Autism Reality experience takes you on a journey from arriving in the carpark, into the main terminal, through check-in, through the shops, into and during security and finally to the gate to board your plane. Only by understanding what this is like for an autistic person can you then put provisions in place to make the Airport truly inclusive and their journey as safe as possible.
The Airport version is ideally suited for:
- Any customer facing airport staff
- Any security employee
- Any support staff within the airport
- Any airline staff that come into direct or indirect contact with Autistic people
- Any organisation that supplies services into the airport
- Any shop or other convenience workers that work within an airport
- Any hotels, taxi’s, petrol stations and other service industry surrounding the airport
